LIGAMENT
ANIMATION SOUND LABORATORY
Library building becomes media building
2012 Halle [Germany]
by I. Lang & J. Lips
The aim of redesigning the original prefabricated building, which was built in 1966, is the implementation of new functions, such as areas for multimedia productions, and areas for the exchange between different courses of studies in the media sector. The design shows a new, animated, and transparent version of the former library building of the university. The existing building was carefully redesigned to create an interface between the BURG university and the outside world. The existing structure has been regarded respectfully, and this is clearly shown in the places where new ideas were introduced and old ideas were preserved. A tape that is wrapped around the building serves as an external stairwell and as an explanation of the inside from the outside. At the same time, the tape element, which gives the building its name, LIGAMENT, acts as a display surface. It is a surface of LEDs, which are filled day and night with graphics and videos, and therefore always offer information about what is going on in the inside.
